Firing Back: Taking on the Party Bosses and Media Elite to Protect Our Faith and Freedom Hardcover – July 15, 2014
In Firing Back, six-term Congressman Todd Akin describes in eye-opening detail what it is like to be an unapologetic conservative in a town dominated by media bullies, back-room bosses, and liberals of either party. Although he tried to be a loyal Republican, Akin's first allegiance was always to the Constitution and his conservative principles. When the Bush administration lobbied him to approve its progressive legislative initiatives, No Child Left Behind and the Medicare prescription drug benefit, Akin refused. In the process, he made some serious enemies.
Those enemies got their revenge after Akin made an awkward comment about rape. Although he had just won a hard-fought Republican primary in Missouri for US Senate, party bosses tried to coerce him to yield the nomination to their preferred candidate. When Akin refused, the bosses turned their back on him and let Democrat Claire McCaskill win.
In Firing Back, Akin tells the story of how the Republican leadership not only threw him under the bus but also ran over him a few times for good measure. Not one of them explained what it was about Akin's remarks that so deeply offended them. Akin names names and takes numbers in Firing Back, but this book is much more than a tell-all. It is a battle-tested guide to Republicans and conservatives to help them find their courage, reclaim their integrity, and, by doing so, help preserve America's faith and freedom.

In 2012, Akin ran for U. S. Senate against the incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill. After winning a crowded Republican primary, he made some injudicious remarks on a taped television program discussion when asked about abortion and his opposition to exceptions for rape. These remarks were misunderstood, and people jumped all over them to misrepresent what he believes. He apologized for his incautious wording and explained what he really meant, but the damage was done. Not only did the Democrats savagely attack him, but many of his fellow Republicans also turned on him and demanded that he withdraw from the race, which he refused to do. He lost to McCaskill in an election year when many other Republicans, including Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, were also defeated as the Democrats falsely accused the Republican Party of waging a “war on women.” This book chronicles these events and gives some general autobiographical background information to explain why Akin takes the stands that he does as a principled conservative and constitutionalist.
The bottom line is that Todd Akin is a God-fearing, decent, honest, patriotic man, the kind which leftists dearly detest, who was shafted by his own party. Though I had made this decision long before these events occurred, what happened to Todd as recorded in this book explains why, even though I remain a Republican, plan to continue voting Republican, support the Republican party platform, and may donate to specific Republican candidates whom I feel that I can trust, never again will any of my money ever go to any of the national Republican organizations simply because they cannot be trusted to do the right thing. With endorsements from Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas; Phyllis Schlafly of Eagle Forum; Steve King, Congressman from Iowa; Michele Bachmann, Congresswoman from Minnesota; David Barton of Wall Builders; Tony Perkins of Family Research Council; and Oliver North, Lt. Col. USMC Ret., Firing Back is a must read for all genuine conservatives.
I am familiar with Rep. Akin, and have always respected him and his family, and felt he got a raw deal in the 2012 election. Until reading his account of it, though, I had no idea just how raw.
Many are familiar with Todd Akin for just two words, “legitimate rape”. In 2012, during his run for U.S. Senate, he was asked in a radio interview about whether or not abortion should be legal in cases of rape. Rep. Akin is staunchly pro-life, and he gave this response,” If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let's assume that maybe that didn't work or something. You know, I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the on rapist and not attacking the child.”
For this comment, his 24 years of service to his country was completely wiped away and an onslaught began against him, both from the Democrats (to be expected), but even from his own party. Republicans ran from him in fear, quaking in their boots because of what the media said.
No wonder I am so disgusted with politics.
The book, overall though, is a fascinating look at what goes on behind the scenes of a campaign. And, I fear it illuminates only too well the answer to, “Why can't we get good citizens to run for office in this country?”
The book starts out with the background of this pivotal event. He then goes on to discuss his own family background, his philosophies of serving in government, education, family life and his walk with Christ. Rep. Akin is a firm Christian voice in a world of “moderates” who will blow with whatever direction the wind blows. He admits that he made no friends in the powerful circles because he would not ever “walk the Party line”. His conscience and his desire to serve the LORD guided every decision.
As I read the accounts of the campaign, and read how even conservative voices that I had previously respected abandoned him, I was fiercely divided. On one hand, I wanted to go back to burying my head from politics (as I have done in large measure since 2008, and almost completely since 2012). On the other, I wanted to get in the fight for our nation.
Even when so many “friends” and those in power turned against him, Rep. Akin never lost his perspective about what really mattered. His faith in Christ remained steadfast. In the end, this is not so much a story about one campaign that was decimated, it is the story of a man, a family and their faith in Christ.
